About Roy Karch:

Along with a Masters degree in health from CCNY, NYU filmmschool instruction from pros and a membership in New York City’s Millennium Film Workshop, Karch possessed an impeccable eye and a penchant for capturing wonderful and perverted sex. In 1970 he himself appeared in 8mm loops for the raincoat crowd at twenty-five cents a peek. Live simulated sex shows on 42nd street followed. The advent of Cable television in 1973 changed the world as we know it. It was through that cable run into your home from a public access tv studio in NYC that Karch began to produce, direct and offer up adult entertainment to be seen in the privacy of your bedroom for the first time anywhere. Never before had that happened.

Shot live on videotape at Richie Havens’ Café Wha? in Greenwich Village, (the first porn shot on video), The Underground Tonight Show had it’s debut in April 1974. The first guests on the Show were Marilyn Chambers, Gerard Damiano and Betty Dodson. The show cablecast 150 hours of programming over the next three years.

In 1975 Karch produced Eros’75…The First American Sex Festival. A dozen Tonguey Awards, named so by The New York Times; and voted on by the public only, were presented to winners for achievements in the erotic arts. Recipients include Christie Hefner, Dr. Alex Comfort, Mick Jagger, Darby Lloyd Rains, and the Argentine Bombshell Ms. Fanne Foxe.

The next thirty-five years saw Karch’s ‘The Jellyroll Company’, alongside ‘a Roy Karch riff’ in most of the major studios’ opening credits as a writer, producer, or director. Wicked Pictures, Adam & Eve, VCX, VCA, Sin City, Video Team, Spice Network, Playboy TV, Dreamland, Coast To Coast and Sex Z Pictures all enjoyed multiple nominations and recognition for this filmmakers’ work. Having so many FIRSTS in our business to list here, a complete filmography, bio and list of Karch’s adult industry contributions can be found on the site.
